Saudi cleric says 'women driver ban guards against evil'
http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/20065013/saudi-cleric-says-women-driver-ban-guards-against-evil/

Riyadh - The grand mufti of Saudi Arabia said a ban on women driving in the conservative Gulf state protects society from "evil", in remarks published in the press on Thursday. Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, in a speech delivered Wednesday in the western city of Medina, said the issue of giving women the right to drive should not be "one of society's major concerns". The kingdom's most senior cleric called for "the matter to be considered from the perspective of protecting society from evil" which, according to him, included letting women drive. His comments came as activists said they had been assured by Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef that authorities were reassessing the controversial Saudi ban on women drivers. "Rest assured that the issue is being discussed, and expect a good outcome," the minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday by Aziza al-Yusef, who met him along with fellow activist Hala al-Dosari.
The absolute monarchy is the only country in the world where women are barred from driving, a regulation that has drawn condemnation from the international community. Prince Mohammed stressed that the ban was "a matter to be decided by the legislative authority", Yusef told AFP. Saudi Arabia has an all-appointed consultative Shura Council, with no elected parliament. The council makes recommendations to the government, but the king remains the absolute legislator.
"We expect a royal decree that gives us this right," Yusef said.
At least 16 women were stopped by police during a driving protest day last month, and were fined and forced along with their male guardians to promise to obey the kingdom's laws. In addition to the driving ban, Saudi women are forced to cover themselves from head to toe and need permission from a male guardian to travel, work and marry.

Well in some countries, the male species are more equal than the female species. With that full ninja suit, it can hinder the driver's ability to be aware and to visually see where they are going.

You can't argue with Kinkdom lores. You just can't defy them.

I reckon women in these country should make a stand or 2, and leave the country.

Due to their beliefs the world would look down at them as a joke.

Gotta wander how many saudi call girls we have in perth.
Few of them think its ok to rock up with a driver.
I always ask and if they hsve a driver tell em no thanks
-I want to pay for a lady not a driver
- theyve got a bad habit of showing back up early
From my experience ladys with drivers give bad service so I dont think the saudis have got this right

Let's just say it's a man made beliefs in certain aspects. I mean would god want a man to have 5 wives and complicate the hell out of family life? Not to mention the back stabbing and infighting. While it's a plus side for your mast.

Hmmm Saudi call girls? do they exist? It's a crime punishable by death in their law. Perhaps stone to death.

My fave rule on marriage was on a documentary recently by National Geographic? If not it was another reputable name But the showed That to prevent immorality Temporary marriages were allowed These could be for a very short period

So of course the fanatics used it to there advantage in the former Yugoslavia
The wives and daughters of non muslims were married to their muslim captors for hours So they would not be committing rape and keeping their souls pure While at the same time degrading these same women And ruining there lives

Eventually these women will run away, and leave a country full of dumb ass men, you need to embrace the future not live in the past

Yep, Saudi Arabia and many other Middle Eastern countries treat women appallingly by our standards but that is the way they, both the men and women, have been brought up and to them it is normal.

While we may regard them as socially backward remember that it was only a couple of hundred years ago in Britain that women were regarded as little more than chattels and only a hundred years ago, give or take a decade, that they were allowed to vote.

For sure, modern Saudi women have a long way to go but they are starting to kick back against male domination with their campaign to be allowed to drive and it looks as if the grey-bearded Islamic clerics are taking notice and trying to keep them in line.

Sooner or later the women of Saudi Arabia will win their battle just as the British women won theirs but it will be a long slow process shaking off centuries of tradition and we probably won't live long enough to see them going out alone wearing shorts and tank tops but it will come eventually.

I really do hope things change for these women and children. I have done a lot of research into this and it's a topic I feel very strongly about but I will contain my view here on this forum.

My trip to Malaysia last year There were many many tourists from the more hardline nations there The local guide said since 9/11 it was to hard for them to get into USA Europe etc But they can come here with no visa troubles and have a tropical holiday and spend time shopping etc
The thing that really annoyed me was Seeing hubby walking around the pool in thongs and shorts and the wife still in head to toe black robes in tropical weather In the western world thats just plain abuse

and this is why the males are terrifying the western world , because of how we treat the women of our respective countries , with equality

Blaming hubby is very simplistic

Ahoy, I do have to agree with the above, change is coming, just look at China, eventually women will leave these countries looking for more freedom and Education and better life styles for themselves and their children, change will occur, will we see it in our life time? I do not think so
Cheers and Pass the Rum

My thoughts are, these ninja suits probably best worn in deserts where harsh wind and sands can ruin one's face, fair enough. Once they are in the city where it's freaking humid and hot, they should have the freedom to wear a onesy. lol...Seeing these women wearing the full ninja suit in 40 degree heat make me squirm and i do not want to walk next to one. You don't know what body odour will emit from these ninja suits wearers.

You get the feeling that originally, as you have touched on Homer, the clothing was designed for protection from the elements And has over the years gone from a traditional and functional attire to a religious /cultural mode of dress

Well sticking to this dress code in all kinds of weather, only benefit the men of that culture. I reckon these ladies are getting better education these days. One day, we may see them out of their face covering suit into a onesy, sexy long hair locks, pretty makeup.

Oh I dont know Homer As Bushseeker pointed out many wear the covering because they want to We are talking the ultra conservatives with Burqas etc
I mean by islamic standards Malaysia is a very liberal moslem nation and many women wear at least a scarf Even if it is only a doffing of the cap to tradition/religion I doubt the bikini will ever be a everyday outfit
We dont condemn Scots men for wearing kilts or Greek and Italian women for wearing black for the rest of their lives if widowed etc Or pretty island girls only wearing grass skirts Do we? Especially the Island girls in grass skirts

Pretty island girls in grass skirts, mmmmmm.....*droolz*.
Men in kilts, oh dear, widowed women in black dress code, burqa wearing because they "want" to or because they can't be bothered shampooing their locks.

I am no religious expert but I wouldn't call Malaysia a liberal moslem nation. True that their women can do away with scarf, and burqa if they choose to. It's still a moslem nation.

Homer Ask a woman in Afghanistan if they think Malaysia a liberal moslem nation
I think they may believe it to be

While that is true, you can also ask a North Korean if China is a liberal communist nation.

On the surface, Malaysia does look that way and maybe more liberal than countries such as Afghanistan. But it's definitely far from the truth.

Naughty Thoughts

I spend all day driving, so I'm more than happy to let Tania have control. Plus being in the passengers seat lets me look around at the scenery as we drive around. And if we go to a function or something and she wants to have a tipple, she's more than happy to have me drive and be safe. I think we have a pretty good arrangement.
