Battle to curb kerb crawlers

Not guilty plea: Calogero Ziino.
City of Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan says it is unacceptable that streets are being turned into brothels and believes kerb crawlers looking for sex should be named and shamed to deter others.

Her comments came as police said they had received 91 complaints about street prostitution since the start of the year. Charges against three men and two women were listed in Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Ms MacTiernan said street prostitution in Highgate was creating a horrible environment.

"Particularly so for women, they are constantly accosted by kerb crawlers," she said. "If you live in that area, you are presumed to be a prostitute selling your wares so that alone creates a really unpleasant living environment," she said.

"We are really trying to stamp this out. It is not acceptable to turn these streets into mobile brothels because it has massive consequences. If they need to do this stuff, go down to the local brothel."

Her comments came as two men were fined yesterday for seeking prostitutes in Highgate this year.

Raffaele Dichiera, who did not appear in court yesterday, entered an endorsed plea of guilty to the charge and was fined $750.

The court was told he approached a woman on a busy street in front of a block of units and offered to pay for sexual acts.

Dharmesh Batavia, 43, also pleaded guilty to seeking a prostitute in Highgate in April. He was fined $500 and granted a spent conviction.

A third man, Calogero Ziino, pleaded not guilty to a charge of seeking a prostitute in a public place in May. Mr Ziino, who will face court again in July, allegedly tried to proposition an undercover female police officer.

Two women - Teena Louise Cotter and Alison Clare Taylor - were due to appear in court yesterday on charges of seeking a client in a public place.

Ms Cotter is expected to reappear in court in July and Ms Taylor, who did not appear, was summoned to attend court on July 11.

Ms MacTiernan said the cases were a warning to the public that people were being penalised over street prostitution.

"Our best bet is to deal with the demand," she said. "We think if we can discourage the men from coming to the area by the knowledge that men are getting caught, they are convicted and they are getting named," she said.

Nine men are due to face court next month charged with seeking a prostitute in a public place.

Yep, the Mayor and the locals are on the warpath against streetwalkers and I don't blame them. It is the ugly side of the industry and an easy target for the wowsers who want the whole industry shut down. The same thing happened around 10 years ago and a bit of naming and shaming shut it down almost overnight so hopefully this latest effort will have similar results.

Unless you want your 15 minutes of fame in the papers best give the streetwalkers in Highgate a miss.

I've heard that one of the guys above who's been fined is married - and either has a lot of explaining to do or - is going to have very expensive time at the divorce courts.

They are quite popular with pensioners.

But I would have to say I've never met a nice street walker yet. They know help is readily available and can work in brothels but they can't toe the line and follow rules
Which means they are back on the streets again.

If not highgate, then where? Northbridge has too much police force for them. They will always exist and it will always be a problem.

It would be a scary prospect for people living there especially those with say teenage daughters
Even if the risk is imagined the thought of having your young family propositioned by kerb krawlers must be quite scary
And I have to agree with Lily the quality girls are private ladies with a professional setup or in establishments where they and there clients are safe
And lilly if they are pensioners Why aren't they using Public transport Its free off peak isn't? it Surely pensioners cant afford cars Or at least the petrol to drive them So sit on the bus do the circuit and hop off do the deal then hop back on (She can pay her own fare He's only a pensioner after all) Get off in Hyde park or where ever, do the evil deed Wait for the next bus home

I'm hardly an expert on this happy2 but if a pensioner walks slowly, Hyde Park could be quite a hiding for him or her. Also, I've lived around Hyde Park before - the mosquitoes are relentless at dusk.

I think there's an issue which may be a marketing opportunity here. Using an analogy - if you want good hire cars, they say Hertz, Avis are the places to go. If you want good cars but some mileage - people say Thrifty. If you want a car that looks good but has quite a bit of mileage on it - there's heaps of places in the Yellow Pages - and then you've got the rent-a-jalopy crowd.

Perhaps, there's a market niche for an establishment for less expensive working (caucasian) women which hasn't been tapped. Not everyone can afford Langtrees or the like. And not everyone wants to go into Asian establishments I suspect.

It is an area Transperth ((Still transperth??) should be looking at They seem to be in need of revenue Kit out one of the City CATS 20 stalls Per bus Instead of circling Perth west Perth say, it could do Highgate instead. No mozzies and a safe enviroment Especially if they maintain there pension rates for such a service

It'd be a great service - pensioners could get a free ride. And because it's free they could name the bus "Sweet Fuck Crawl". The entry door could have a sign just saying "Come in". Unless of course, some of the passengers come down with disease, it could be called "The Clap Trap". Anyone who's young(er) would be forced to stand up for the elderly and be called "Pole Dancers". The transvestites could be called "Pole Dance Sirs?".

Instead of calling the journey by different coloured names like green, red etc, they could simply name the route as "The Root".

:)

They could ALL be colour coded so you have an idea what is on offer inside.

Also change the name from Yellow CAT Route to Yellow CAT root.
