Common sense...

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

P.S I found this on another site but I thought it was worth a read since most of it seems to be true.

I think it's a bunch of bullshit. Common sense is purely a social construct. What is considered "common sense," in one society is not considered so in another society. The term itself implies that there are things that we should be, or are, born knowing. And this is simply not true.

I don't think it is bullshit. All of the statements made are quite true and show how our society has become extremely letigious. This has been due to the over-riding American influence.

If you prick your finger with a pin and it bleeds, you should claim the cost of a Bandaid from the pin manufacturers and also sue them for pain, loss of the ability to use a finger (albeit for only a short period) and for the costs of the legal proceedings. However, your chances of succeeding are probably small as the pin was probably manufactered in China using Western Australian Iron Ore and Natural Gas and Queensland Coal!!!

I do agree with tannerone It is not Bullshit
As for common sense being a social construct Surely walking through a paddock with out shoes is stupid so if you automatically put on some footwear that is just "Common Sense" and not something society expects us to do

I think there are a lot of situations in society where common sense does not prevail.

The biggest problem with commonsense is that, these days, it isn't common any more.

so sad most of us doesn't use our common sense anymore..I think it might be because of the advanced technology..we are too dependent of the technology..that's why sometimes we don't use our brains....lol

I think we should remove all warning labels and let nature take its course. It will soon sort out who has common sense and who doesn't. What? You cant drink drain cleaner???

Most of what has been labelled "common sense" is pure logic, which should be used more often, by more people. However, I get tired of being told that something is "common sense" when someone wants me to agree with them when I don't. Similar to being told that one has a "chip on your shoulder." That is because one doesen't agree with what was originally said.

In terms of it being a social construct, it is. In the 50's it was "common sense" not to put a hat on the table. There were reasons for that, which are now defunct, and it is no longer seen as common sense not to do that. The world is full of examples like this.

Hmmmm.......I have a question. If 'common sense' was used for the benefit of others rather than to defend, protect, or justifies ones beliefs would it then have a totally different nature? Could it even be more functional in this day and age?

LOL not putting your hat on the table is etiquette and manners (2 other things a lot of people seem to lack in). Common sense and logic do go hand in hand and are definitely lacking in a huge number of the worlds population these days. It seems a lot of people are far to lazy to think for themselves and are to easy to blame others for their own thoughtless mistakes.
