I really hope this will help researchers find a cure for Cancer,,every step is a step closer. But what a weird looking critter it is helping them. The Naked Mole Rat,,not very attractive creature at all.

Two researchers at the University of Rochester have discovered the chemical that makes naked mole rats cancer-proof. Their research paper is published this week in the journal Nature.

The findings could eventually lead to new cancer treatments in people, said study authors Andrei Seluanov and Vera Gorbunova.

Naked mole rats are small, hairless, subterranean rodents that have never been known to get cancer, despite having a 30-year lifespan. The research group led by Seluanov and Gorbunova discovered that these rodents are protected from cancer because their tissues are very rich with high molecular weight hyaluronan (HMW-HA).

Well lets hope they can apply it to human without the side effect of turning into one ourselves. Being able to live a further 30 years at my age, is a bonus...

Well, don't get your hopes up just yet.

There have been a lot of cancer "breakthroughs" which have sunk without a trace and even if this one is the goods it will still take years of research and clinical trials etc before your G.P. can prescribe it.

Check out the teeth on those little critters!! Ouch!! Anyway my dog was diagnosed with cancer over a year ago now-amongst many of the other things tried, I was told about a treatment available from the states-it consisted of four injections that were administered weekly-it basically gets the immune system to recognise the cancer cells and destroy them. I had to get it flown over as unfortunately it isn't available here yet. But it was well worth it. As I said she's been cancer free for about 15 months now-oh and she's 15 and a half as well!! Anyway her Dr was saying that within 10 years, cancer will no longer be the death sentence it is now. She said they are actually making a lot of progress and it will only be a matter of time before they'll be able to treat it. They are currently working on a human version of the treatment my girl was given, so hopefully it won't be too long til it's available for humans. And yes Viv, also something for your little darling!!
