Sexpo backlash: church group fears rise in sexually transmitted disease
Updated 9 hours 47 minutes ago

A Tasmanian church group is worried the sex and lifestyle event Sexpo could contribute to the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Sexpo will be staged in Hobart next month, the first time since its inception almost two decades ago.

It will feature stage shows, stalls and adult entertainers.

Pat Gartlan from the Catholic Women's League wants it stopped.

"It promotes deviance and promiscuity, it does create problems with our health system. I mean there's a great deal of concern about chlamydia in this community," she said.

The organisers had expected some backlash, saying the event often attracts criticism when it is held in a new area.

Sexpo general manager Tracey Browning says it is quite a tame affair.

"There's absolutely no live sex, or any sex happening at the show," she said.

"We have stage shows that are very risque and titillating, but more just entertainment value and obviously we have adult products on display, but along with those most of our exhibitors sell condoms."

The show has been endorsed by Lord Mayor Damon Thomas but Mrs Gartlan says the council should never have agreed to host it.

"What we're dealing with here is pornography, sleaze, and deviant sex."

"From what I've read, particularly about the Sydney Sexpo, it's not a healthy display of sexuality a kind of normal healthy display of sexuality."

Last week, Alderman Thomas said the event was restricted to adults and should not be judged by people who had not seen it.

"Hobart will judge it, people will judge it as to whether or not..it's something they want to see again next year," he said.
