Measuring just 39.9cm, Nerina Orton's waist is the thinnest in Britain.
Student Nerina Orton has gone to extreme lengths to earn the title of the thinnest waist in Britain, constricting her waist with a corset for 23 hours every day.
The 22-year-old Birmingham resident and part time burlesque dancer’s waist measures a miniscule 39.9cm, making her less than one inch away from breaking the world record of 38.1cm, held by American Cathie Jung.
Nerina, who began wearing corsets at the ripe old age of fourteen, hopes to whittle her waist down to just 35.6cm.
“Wearing a corset makes me feel so feminine and it's a great way for a skinny girl to get some hips,” Nerina said.
Owning an astonishing 78 corsets valued at around $24, 000 Nerina is dedicated to this pursuit, already managing to shave six inches off her waist in the past nine years.
'I’ve managed to take six inches off my waist, but I know that each inch after that can take up to a year to achieve,” Nerina said.
Women have used corsets for many centuries as a means of shaping their bodies into their ideal, womanly body shape, with the earliest image of a corset being recorded in 2000 BC.
Nerina lists the hourglass shape of women during the Victorian era as the inspiration behind her corsetry.
'I love Victorian era clothing and I adore the delicate waists women had back then - they look so womanly,” she said.
Nerina is so dedicated to the cause that she even sleeps in her corset, removing it only to shower.
'Sleeping in the corset was uncomfortable at first. I felt like I had a rod lined up against my back and I couldn't curl up into a ball,” Nerina said.
Despite the potential medical risks of tight lacing on the heart, lungs and circulation, Nerina doesn’t seem phased.
'There’s no proof that corsets affect your health, so I don’t see why I should stop wearing them,' she said.
Nerina undertakes precautionary x-rays twice yearly to ensure her body isn’t buckling under the pressure of the corset.
'My ribs have moved closer together, so the doctor checks my spine to make sure it hasn't moved out of line or fractured,” she sai
