This is my third visit to Kolkata and when I first arrive I stay at the Novatel Hotel in New Town. It is a wonderful hotel , fantastic service, great rooms and ranges from $125-$200 a day with a fab breakfast buffet included. I only stay for a few days and move to a guest house about 5 minutes...
