Nice to know we've come a long way.

A Victoria Park real estate agent has been suspended after writing a vile, racist email to former tenants, claiming she hoped migrants moving over from Asia would not turn Australia “into the filth that is India”.

The State Administrative Tribunal this week deemed Bronwyn Pollitt, director of Mavin Real Estate, unfit to hold a real estate and business agents licence for eight months from September 1.

The shocking case has prompted calls from ethnic community advocate Suresh Rajan for a police investigation and stricter standards to stamp out racism in real estate, which he claims is rife.

The tribunal was told Ms Pollitt emailed Sandeep Kumar in May 2021 after he disputed having a cleaning bill taken from his bond.

Mr Kumar had vacated the Hocking home six months earlier with fellow leaseholder Ritu Devi Sharma.

In the email, she claimed Australian living standards, quality of life and expectations were different to the “overcrowded, overpopulated, dirty squaller (sic) of many countries including India”.

“I as a white Australian believe you and the others come to Australia as you want to enjoy the lovely way of life we enjoy. Clean, fresh air, jobs or if you cannot get a job social support, medical help and no overpopulation,” she said in the email, submitted to the tribunal.

“Hopefully the massive influx of Indian people will not turn our beautiful country into the filth that is India where bodies are on the street, half burnt bodies are in the river and people climb over each other for medical help while living in absolute slums.

“It all starts with cleaning the rental properties though and being mindful of what you have left and knowing the same thing as India will become Perth if you make no attitude changes.“

The dispute arose after a routine final inspection at the Bonython Avenue unit.

“A general vacate clean is usually about $1000 and a white Australian has an expectation that they will move into clean Australian standards, not an Indian standard clean,” the letter continued.

“Different if we moved to India then. We would have to put up with the Indian standard. You have a right to your culture as fo (sic) we and the cleaning of properties cannot be lowered to suit another culture.”

Ms Pollitt apologised about a month later.

“Firstly, I apologise if you believe I have been racist against you,” she emailed. “That was never my intent.”

The court was told that Ms Pollitt was under pressure at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which included significant regulatory changes and an increase in rental conflicts.

This clearly has a white supremacist attitude, in terms of saying, we are so far superior to you in terms of cleanliness.

She has since made internal changes in her office to avoid a similar situation and has agreed to cultural training and mentoring. She declined to comment on Friday.

But Mr Rajan, the former president of the Ethnic Communities Council, called on the police to take action, claiming it was the worst case of overt, blatant racism he had seen in years.

He said it breached the criminal code’s racial vilification legislation. A breach carries potential jail terms of five to 14 years.

“This clearly has a white supremacist attitude, in terms of saying, we are so far superior to you in terms of cleanliness,” he said.

Mr Rajan said racism was rife in the real estate, claiming the housing crisis had hit ethnic and Indigenous tenants harder than most, as they struggled to find suitable rentals and had bonds unfairly withheld on departure.
